Rhodes: A popular stage for film productions
With its lush scenery, rich cultural background and ideal weather conditions Rhodes is a popular destination for movie shooting. Already from the early post-war years until today, Rhodes has hosted dozens of local and foreign cinema productions.
Rhodes will make its first appearance on the big screen in 1948 with the film of Michael Gaziadis "Anna Roditis", starring Lambros Konstantaras. One of the most important postwar films, dedicated to the struggling Greek people.
Then follows a series of unforgettable Greek movies like "Cruise to Rhodes' directed by John Dalianidis, the" Nights in Mira-Mare "directed by Orestes Laskou," Bait ", directed by Alekos Sakellariou and starring Vouyiouklaki Alice, the" Girls for Kissing "Yannis Dalianidis," Kati kourasmena palikaria” Nikos Dimopoulos etc.
Rhodes was soon discovered by the foreign producers who chose the island to star in their films. In 1960 Yul Brynner will star in "Sunrise Package", filmed in breathtaking Lindos and in 1961 Anthony Quinn, will include footage from the island of the Knights in one of the greatest movies of all time, the "Guns of Navarone". Rhodes was also included in «La chasse à l'homme» with Catherine Deneuve and Jean-Paul Belmondo, and since 1979 many famous actors have come to the island for the movie «Escape to Athena».
The filming of "High Season” will be hosted in Lindos in 1987 and the movie «Pascali's Island» in various parts of Rhodes in 1988. Scenes from Rhodes also appears in the film "Jerusalem" by Elie Chouraqui and "Idegolo" by Gergely Fonyó of 2006 and in “El Greco” by Yannis Smaragdis in 2007.

The «Sune In Greece» is a popular Swedish series of books which have been translated into many languages. There are twenty seven books about Sune and all have reached the Top 10 best seller Sweden book list. The producers chose Rhodes to carry the big screen the first of the books in the series!
In 2015 Rhodes hosted the Greek-French production «Voir du pays» (Turning the world), a Greek-French filf that was even screened at the 69th Cannes Film Festival.
The latest major production hosted by Rhodes was the movie "Swing Away" with a dynamic cast (including Shannon Elizabeth, Manos Gavras and Renos Charalambides). Filmed in Rhodes and in Los Angeles and the film began to appear in the US in late October 2016.
