Σύμη The wine presses

In the Byzantine times the residents of Symi dealt with the shipping, the shipbuilding, the trade, the sponges and the viticulture. As the wanderers of the era report, the viticulture evolved and the island mainly produced white wine, which was considered of high quality.

In 1992 the researcher Sarantis Kritikos recorded over 120 wine presses in different locations in the island. Their architecture shows their evolution from the first building trials with monoliths, up to the closed wine presses in the late 18th century, when the vine cultivation stopped.

Today, 11 wine presses have been restored in the area of Kourkounioti within a cypress forest.
