The initial core of the settlement was located on the hill of Agios Nikolaos, inside the castle. It was extended on its blooming period, in the second half of the 19th century. It is amphitheatrically built and it currently consists of the districts of Pigadia and Horafia. On the port there is Kentro, Pera Meria (or Paliomeria) and Kavos. Walking by, you will see the mosque, which is said to have operated until 1913, beside Faros. It was built upon the ruins of Agia Paraskevi. The square has the name of Savvas Nikolaou, who was executed by the Germans because he blew up the airport in Kalathos of Rhodes. During your walk you will pass by the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and you will reach the old municipal market. The church of Agios Georgios tou Pigadiou with the clock of 1903 stands out on the beach. <\/p>\n
Mandraki<\/strong><\/p>\n East of the main settlement, Mandraki is the second, smaller, port which is being developed. The best way to go to Mandraki is by walking the pebble-paved path that passes below the castle, beside the sea. Walking until its end among the few houses, you will see the small shipyard. It is worth taking the coastal walk beside the pine trees as you will feel that you have reached at the extremity of Greece!
