The port of Gavrio developed in the early ‘70s, when liners stopped docking at the port of Chora. There are shops, restaurants, cafés, bars, accommodation facilities and campgrounds in the village. The large church of Agios Nikolaos and the elementary school stand tall above the port. Gavrio is the best starting point for those who want to get to know western Andros, an unexplored part of the island with significant traces of its history, such as old watermills, threshing floors, towers, abandoned stone house settlements and “kelia”. There are also beautiful beaches, such as Fellos, Pisolimionas, Vlychada with its Castle, Vitali and Zorkos, on this part of the island.
