People here raise small herds, mainly goats, while there are plenty of hens. Folegandros goats are known in the whole South Aegean for their delicious meat because of the salt left by the winds in grasslands. The xeric flora of the island, rich in endemic herbs, is responsible for the high nutritional value of the local honey. Except for thyme, savory and sage (alisfakia in local dialect) there thrive anemones, cyclamen and several species of amaranth which enhance its flavor and quality. Apart from the known wooden cells there are also stone beehives preserved in the countryside in fixed order, excellent samples of traditional stonework.
