Halki Feasts and Customs

August 15: Dormition of Virgin Mary, at the church of Panagia Choriani, in Chorio.The feast begins with treats on the eve after the Vespers. The locals make fun with improvised couplets.

August 29: Beheading of Agios Ioannis Prodromos at the monastery of Ai Giannis Alargas. A joint dinner, usually with lamb, follows.

September 14:Exaltation of the Holy Cross, at the monastery of Stavros.

November 8: Synaxis of Archangel Michael and the Other Bodiless Powers, at the monastery of Taxiarchis Michael Palarniotis.

CULTURAL EVENTS

During the first fortnight of September there are theatrical and musical nights in Nimborio.

A typical custom of Halki is ‘Sykalies’, which is organized on the celebratory day of Sotiras (Savior), on August 6.
