Kasos Marine Engineering

After the holocaust, the Kasians that survived escaped to the nearby islands, like Naxos, Milos, Santorini, Amorgos and returned back to their island after the end of the warfare, around 1840. There, they dedicated themselves to the art of marine engineering and as a consequence, Kasos was then considered to be one of the most important centres of marine engineering in the east Mediterranean. During the period 1838-1888, 350 boats where built in the shipyards of the island for ship owners from all over the Aegean and the Ionian islands.
