Makronisos has been inhabited since the times of the Early Cycladic Culture. Remains of a settlement found in Lionari date back to 2500 B.C. Prehistoric graves, broken pieces of vessels, shells and obsidian tools have been found in other locations.
In Agios Georgios, architectural parts of buildings dating back to the classical period are still preserved.
