In Naxos they have discovered bones of dwarf elephants of Pleistocene Age. In 1961 professor M. Mpardanis took the well-preserved jawbone of an elephant to the Geology-Paleaontology laboratory in Athens. It was found in Tripiti gorge, in the complex of Zas. It was studied by professor M. Moutsopoulos and found to belong in the species of Palaeoloxodon antiquus melitensis.
