It was created as a museum of maritime art in 1983 and in 1990 it was housed in a marvelous neoclassic building where the central shipyard of Symi was found. It includes a specialized section dedicated to sponge fishing with diving suits, diving equipment, various types of sponges, skandalopetres and other accessories of sponge divers, as well as sponge-fishing boat models.
