If you happen to be on the island at Easter, you should not miss the “Festival of Love” celebrating the departure of the sponge fishing boats, also known as the festival of the sponge fishermen.
The most important festivals are those of Agios Panteleimonas (26 July) and Kimisis tis Theotokou (Dormition of Virgin Mary) (25 August). The preparations last for several days and there is plenty of food, pastries and of course lots of dancing.
They also celebrate the May Day and Agios Ioannis Klidonas on 23rd June, when the locals set fires, jump over them and then dive into the sea.
