The museum aims at promoting Greek and international contemporary art. It opened in 1979 to house the works of sculptor Michalis Tombros. In 1986, a new wing comprising 1,000m2 was added. Works of distinguished Greek and foreign artists are on display, while exhibitions of the work of important artists are held in the New Wing since 1986 along with discussions, film screenings and educational programs. The acclaim that the museum has gained on international level is proven by the fact that every year, many people come to the island specifically for its exhibitions. Some of its most important exhibitions held in the past were dedicated to Picasso, Matisse, Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Chagall, Rodin and Miro.
