Palaiokastro, at the northern part of Ios, is a charming place. Built 300 meters above the sea surface forms, literally, the surrounding of a Byzantine –and later a Venetian- fort dating back to the early 16th century, when the island fell under the domination of Byzantium for a while. The castle belonged to a wider network of “early warning” of Constantinople about raidings of enemy fleets. Panagia Palaiokastritissa is located on the fort.
Walking up there, from the path that passes over the brink of the cliff, is a unique experience, especially in the evening.
