Ο οικισμός πήρε το όνομά του από την ομώνυμη εκκλησία, η οποία είναι πολιούχος του νησιού. Ο κόλπος μπροστά από τον οικισμό είναι ασφαλής για αγκυροβόλιο μόνο με καλό καιρό, μιας και είναι ανοικτός στο μελτέμι.
