Πάρος Marmara

It was called Archontochori due to the numerous marbles which adorned its houses and churches, and it is the land of Mavrogenous family. Many mansions are preserved in good condition and by walking you will see old cisterns and “volta” (arches). The churches that have been built with ancient parts of the area’s temples stand out: the church of Pera Panagia, or Panagia Marmariani (17th century) and the church Kimisis tis Theotokou, which is the metropolis and it has a beautiful wood-carved iconostasis and three bell-towers, each of them built in a different style. Other churches are those of Agios Savvas with a bell-tower of the early 17th century, Agios Ioannis, Agia Marina, Metamorfosi tou Christou. Marmara is surrounded by a fertile valley and its seaport is Molos.
